Reflecting on this class session, I found it deeply insightful, particularly in exploring the nuances between introspection and extrospection. The discussion emphasised the importance of balancing internal self-awareness with the perception of external stimuli, which is crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of resonance.
The session provided a clear distinction between introspection, where one reflects on internal thoughts and emotions, and extrospection, which focuses on the observation of external stimuli and their effects on our internal state. This dual awareness is essential in the design process, especially when working on projects that require a deep connection between sound and visual elements, such as in the Transformative Colour Resonance Environment (TCRE) assignment.
The exploration of psychoacoustics and its relation to immersive thinking was another highlight. Understanding the psychological perception of sound and how it can influence emotional and physical states adds a new layer of complexity to design work. This ties back to the concept of resonance, not just as a physical phenomenon but as a bridge between the internal and external experiences, making it a powerful tool in creative projects.
Moreover, the introduction to tools like BrainAural and the discussion on audio spectrum resonance opened up new possibilities for creative expression. These tools encourage experimenting with how different brainwave states can affect mood, which can be directly applied to enhancing the emotional impact of a project.
The session also touched on the importance of texture in composition, whether in music or visual design. The concepts of monophonic, homophonic, and polyphonic textures offer different approaches to layering elements within a composition, each with its unique impact on the viewer or listener's experience. This is particularly relevant to my ongoing work in visualising sound and music, where understanding how to balance and contrast elements can lead to more compelling and emotionally resonant outcomes.
Overall, this class session reinforced the need to be both inwardly reflective and outwardly perceptive in the design process, encouraging a holistic approach that considers the psychological and physiological impacts of creative work.
