Laureant Nguyen | S3975198

Feel free to give me your feedback :3 Thanks

Jayden

First initial response is that the amount ofwork and the extent of your research is a lot. The information that you have should be compacted down to 1000 words, bringing all of the best ideas and research along with it. The abstract provides me with an idea about what the paper is going to be about, it would be good to see citation to some of the claims made and more about information about the resonance aspect of your research. The information about how we see colour introduces us to your main thoughts and ideas you want to focus on. When gaining reliable information to put in your work, try to use scholarly or reliable sources of information. Although Wikipedia may be a great place to start, some of the information on their may not be 100% accurate. Some great information about the colour violet and how our minds interact with different wavelengths, I am a bit confused about the timestamps you have. Where are these from and what do they mean in context to your work? What are your deeper thoughts about the information in the timestamps? I think it would be beneficial to open yourself up to other ideas within your research. Possibly save your interest in violet for your design pathways. Explore other ideas as well. As you move towards resonance, putting the user in the context of what resonance we are talking about means the reader has a better understanding of what is being talked about. Exploring an intrapersonal relationship with these ideas is a crucial element in deciding what it is you like or dislike as it plays a major role on our emotional valence. I feel that the work needs to be reviewed and some of the aspects that we talked about during class studios should be introduced into your work, but, overall I have a vision of were you want to take your future work

Diem Mi

Your proposal is very insightful with extensive research done on cyan, violet and yellow. I enjoyed reading the examples and inspirations where these colours are found in such as in our media which was very interesting. Your work reads more like a report rather than a proposal which could be that there was no section to explore your ideas and the concepts you are going to use for your future projects. It would be great to see how these colours and how it’s explored in the media has influenced your design plans or how you were going to use these concepts to create something more unique and innovative. It would also be nice to have dedicated sections talking about resonance and analyse any scientific research such as resonance mechanisms where storytelling increases resonance and emotional bonds. I think many concpets we covered in class will blend in very well with your research as well as any research of your own.

Brandon

I like the detailed and insightful research into cyan, violet, and yellow, I think it shows the deep dive and understanding into colours. I think it would be better if you could find a way to integrate your report into your design pathways. There are certainly a lot you’ve talked about in your paper and I think it would serve you plenty of ideas when coming up with a design pathway so definitely looking forward to that. I think it would be beneficial to include some of your own thoughts, as it is okay for this course to share some personal connections and thoughts regarding colours and emotions. Your research section are perfect, I think it just needs a bit of your own thinking and opinion regarding how your research will relate to affective resonance and how might you apply your thinking into your design pathways?

Calvin

WOW! Your research is amazing! Super in-depth, explores interesting concepts while providing a lot of supportive material.

I was most intrigued about the phenomenon of violet and how it “doesn’t exist.” In addition, the mention of the converse, cyan and yellow being “real” is super interesting.

I love how you explored the relationship between colour and culture.

There are many concepts you touched upon that could be expanded and used for your future work. Your PDF would be even better if you added your own insights and opinions on these matters, and which concepts you decide upon to explore for your design practice.

Lily

Your research on color perception, focusing on cyan, violet, and yellow, is really insightful and shows a lot of depth. I especially enjoyed the way you linked these colors to examples from media and cinema—it made the content relatable and engaging.

However, the document feels more like a report than a proposal. It might benefit from including a section that explores how these colors will influence your future projects. It would be great to see how your research and the examples you've shared have shaped your design ideas. This could help highlight your unique approach and how you plan to use these colors in innovative ways.

Also, it would be interesting to see a dedicated section on resonance, perhaps analyzing scientific research on how resonance can enhance storytelling and emotional connections in design. I think incorporating concepts we’ve discussed in class, along with your research, could really strengthen your proposal and make it stand out even more.

Mav

When I saw your work, my immediate impression was that you've done a lot of research, incorporating various theories and images that clearly showcase your understanding. Your work contains many strong theoretical points, but I think it would be beneficial to summarize them. This feels more like a list of research findings, and I'm not sure if it aligns with the requirements for our A1 assignment. However, regardless of that, you've done a lot of interesting research, and I believe these points will be very inspiring for me. I'm really looking forward to seeing the final design work you create.

Jack

The research gathered in this document is well done, and it was interesting to see the various theories and points regarding the subjects you’ve looked into. The usage of imagery also helped to showcase the points being raised from the research. The one section regarding color perception based upon cultural influence was very interesting to myself, as I am looking into that section of resonance as a possible focus for my project.

For feedback I would have to say though there is a lot of great information being presented here, it doesn’t seem like there was a focus on creating potential design pathways for your project. I would say the research could also be condensed to allow for the most vital research you’ve gathered to presented, which would help to showcase the focus of the project idea in a more clearer detail.

Jade

The research you have put into cyan, yellow and violet was very insightful and impressive. It was really nice how you explained the impact and resonance of each colour in depth. You also linked it to numerous films and explained how each colour evoked a different emotion. I also really liked how you explained how different cultural aspects can affect how we perceive colour. However, I think it would be good if you linked the research you have done to where you are headed with your future work. You have provided a lot of insightful information on each of these colours but I would also like to know how you are going to use that with your personal work. Also, I think it would be good if you touched more on the concept of resonance by itself rather than only linking it to those specific colours. Otherwise, goodjobb on your research.

PROFESOR FEEDBACK

Dr. Cy Gorman

Laureant, your paper provides a reasonably solid exploration of the interplay between color and resonance and how these elements can influence design outcomes. You’ve done a commendable job in discussing the emotional and psychological impacts of color, as well as the concept of resonance, particularly in the context of design.

Your research is foundationally well-grounded, and you’ve articulated your insights reasonably clearly. Ive added a few annotated notes on your paper for you to review. While your work in the "Colour" and "Resonance" sections is well-researched and thorough, the transition to the "Transformative Production Pathways" section could benefit from greater synthesis and a more cohesive application of the insights you’ve gathered. The key to strengthening your paper lies in more explicitly integrating your research findings into the development of new design concepts and speculative ideas in the Transformative Production Pathways section taking you into A2 and A3.

You’ve effectively explored the psychological effects of colour, discussing how various colors can evoke specific emotional responses and how this can be strategically applied in design. The research is detailed and shows a strong understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of color theory in design buy moving forward consider including more specific examples or case studies that illustrate how these psychological effects of colour have been successfully implemented in existing design projects. This would not only strengthen your analysis but also provide a more tangible foundation for the ideas you propose later on. It would be beneficial to explore the contextual variability of colour perception, such as cultural differences in colour meanings, which could add depth to your understanding and application.

Your discussion on resonance, particularly how it can create a deeper emotional connection with the audience, is insightful and well-articulated.

You’ve done well to explore the psychological and physiological aspects of resonance. The connection between resonance and emotional engagement is clearly made, showing a good grasp of the concept’s importance in design. Moving forward, consider expanding on how resonance can interact with other design elements, such as movement, space, or sound, to create a more holistic design experience. Providing concrete examples of resonance in action, particularly within a design context, could strengthen your analysis. It would also be useful to delve into how different mediums (e.g., digital vs. physical) might affect the way resonance is experienced and perceived by users.

You’ve begun to make connections between your research and potential design applications, which is a promising start. There’s a clear intention to apply your theoretical insights practically, which shows an understanding of the importance of translating research into actionable design ideas. This will require practice-based synthesis to explore your research findings and the proposed production pathways could be more explicitly articulated. Clearly demonstrating how specific insights from your "Colour" and "Resonance" sections inform your proposed design ideas will strengthen the overall coherence of your paper and its relationship to what comes next. (ideally already working on it..)

Develop A2 concrete examples of design concepts or projects that could be directly inspired by your research. For example, if you’ve discussed how certain colours can evoke calmness (and other affects), propose a specific design project that utilizes these colors in a way that enhances the user’s emotional experience.

Engage in speculative thinking by proposing innovative ways these concepts could be applied in future design projects or in emerging fields such as virtual reality or interactive media.

Suggestions for Strengthening Your Work:

1. Enhance Synthesis by linking Theory to Practice:

• Make sure to articulate how these insights directly inform the design concepts you’re proposing or working on in A2 and 3.

• Use transitional phrases that clearly connect your research findings to the proposed design applications, ensuring a smooth and logical flow of ideas.

2. Develop Concrete Design Concepts:

• Present specific design projects or concepts that embody the integration of color and resonance. For example, propose processes that use color and sonic resonance to create a calming atmosphere? Where might it happen? At home? On the train? In a high-stress environment, such as a hospital waiting room? You don't HAVE to do this, just thought it might get you thinking...

• Include visual representations, such as sketches, mood boards, or conceptual diagrams, to illustrate your ideas and make them more tangible.

• Discuss how your designs would function in different contexts and how various audiences might perceive them. Address potential challenges and explain how your design choices aim to overcome them or enhance user experience.

3. Employ Lateral Thinking Techniques: Conceptual Blending:

• Blend different concepts from your research to create innovative design ideas. For example, how could you combine the calming effects of certain colors with the emotional resonance of specific sounds to create an immersive experience?

Scenario Planning:

Imagine different scenarios where your research could be applied. What if you were designing for a multicultural audience? How would you use your understanding of color and resonance to ensure that your design resonates across cultures?

4. Reflective Practice:

• Continue to document all your design process, reflecting on how your research informs each decision and how your ideas evolve over time. This practice will help you maintain a strong connection between theory and practice.

• Include reflections on challenges and how you overcame them, as well as on how user feedback might influence your design process.

User Engagement and Iteration:

Moving Forward to Assessment 2:

As you move forward to Assessment 2, the focus should be on translating your theoretical insights into practical design projects. Ensure that each design decision is intentional and backed by your research, demonstrating a clear and thoughtful approach.

Key Steps:

Plan Your Projects:

• Outline specific design projects you intend to develop, detailing how they will explore and exemplify the relationship between color and resonance.

5. Prototype and Experiment:

• Develop prototypes to test and refine your concepts, embracing experimentation and learning from the iterative process.

Evaluate and Reflect:

• Assess the effectiveness of your designs in achieving the desired emotional and psychological impacts, using both self-reflection and external feedback.

6. Document Your Process:

• Keep comprehensive records of your design process, including research, development, testing, and reflections, to showcase your methodological approach and critical thinking. Overall, your research shows promise, but its only the beginning.... You have to DO now... By strengthening the synthesis between your research and practical applications, your work will become even more impactful and insightful. Embrace creativity and critical thinking as you continue to develop your ideas, and don’t hesitate to explore bold and innovative approaches.

I look forward to seeing how your work evolves in the next assessment! Let me know if you need any further assistance or feedback!
